Our Acupuncturist

Timothy HillengasTim is a licensed Acupuncture Physician through the State of Florida and the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Tim graduated from the National Institiute of Oriental Medicine in 1997.

Tim was a Florida State licensed massage therapist for 16 years in the Tampa Bay area before he became interested in Oriental Medicine in 1997.

The stepping stone into Oriental Medicine for Tim was after 5 years of receiving various therapies for sciatic pain with no relief.  In 1993, Tim decided to try acupuncture as a last resort like most Americans do, which would be his first choice for any health condition today.  Tim was treated by a licensed acupuncturist for several months with total relief of sciatic pain and has had no recurrence since.

In 1998, Tim began practicing Oriental Medicine at Heaven Scent in Orlando, Florida which included another practitioner, massage therapist and yoga instuctor.  Heaven Scent also offered Herbs, vitamins, essential oils, incense, homoeopathy and many other health products.

In 2006 through 2011, Tim had a private practice in the Town of Inglis and worked part time at Better health Chiropractic in Crystal River, FL.

Tim now practices exclusively at Ideal Health Enrichment Center in Homosassa, FL and looks forward in serving people in Homosassa and the Citrus County area for any health care concerns.

What is traditional Chinese medicine?

TCM is a gentle, effective and safe method of holistic healing that works on the physical, emotional and psycho-spiritual levels. TCM includes the modalities of acupuncture, Chinese herbal formulas, acupressure, energetic exercise, such as Tai Qi and Qigong, and dietary advice.

Chinese medicine is the oldest professional, continually practiced literal medicine in the world. Chinese medicine works by re-establishing balance and harmony within the body.

Practitioners of Chinese Medicine diagnose what is out of balance in a person’s body by employing four basic examinations. The first is questioning about one’s signs and symptoms, medical history and disease. The second is visually inspecting the face, body and especially one’s tongue and its coating. The third is listening to one’s voice and the sound of one’s breathing as well as smelling any odors emanating from one’s body. The fourth is palpating various areas of the body, especially the pulse at both wrists.

Acupuncture Faqs:

What can I expect during an acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncturists use many different modalities during the course of a treatment, some of which are described below:

Acupuncture uses very fine needles which are inserted into the skin. Some needles are retained for a short period, while others are inserted and removed once the desired effect is obtained.

Acupressure & Oriental Massage are frequently used as an adjunct treatment.

Traditionally, treatments are administered lying down and range from 40 - 60 minutes

What does acupuncture feel like?

Patients new to acupuncture are often surprised that they feel almost no sensation at all. Tiny acupuncture needles* are gently inserted at specific points in the body. Sometimes, there is a slight tingling, a mild ache, or sense of heaviness at the place of insertion. * Needles are sterile, single use, and individually packaged. Sterile needle technique is used at all times!

What results can I expect from acupuncture?

Most people are surprised at how relaxed and comfortable they feel after an acupuncture treatment. Symptom relief is often immediate, but several treatments are often needed to remain symptom free in between visits. For structural problems such as back pain, particularly when it is severe or chronic I find helpful to combine modalities such as acupuncture and deep tissue massage therapy. Chronic or severe medical conditions require more frequent treatments in the beginning, and take a longer time to resolve.

Acupuncture limits

Oriental Medicine and acupuncture are powerful healing tools, but they are not panaceas nor the solution to every health care problem. Both Western and Oriental Medicine have their respective strengths and weaknesses, which is why in modern China, the two systems are used together. When appropriately combined, the patient is well served.

Generally speaking, acute, life threatening conditions are best handled by Western medical doctors. Routine health problems and chronic conditions, for which drug therapy and surgery have not been effective, often benefit from Acupuncture / Oriental Medicine.

Is acupuncture safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners in 1996. The FDA requires that sterile, nontoxic needles be used and that they be labeled for single use by qualified practitioners only.
