Acupuncturists use many different modalities during the course of a treatment, some of which are described below:
Acupuncture uses very fine needles which are inserted into the skin. Some needles are retained for a short period, while others are inserted and removed once the desired effect is obtained.
Acupressure & Oriental Massage are frequently used as an adjunct treatment.
Traditionally, treatments are administered lying down and range from 40 - 60 minutes
Patients new to acupuncture are often surprised that they feel almost no sensation at all. Tiny acupuncture needles* are gently inserted at specific points in the body. Sometimes, there is a slight tingling, a mild ache, or sense of heaviness at the place of insertion.
* Needles are sterile, single use, and individually packaged. Sterile needle technique is used at all times!
Most people are surprised at how relaxed and comfortable they feel after an acupuncture treatment. Symptom relief is often immediate, but several treatments are often needed to remain symptom free in between visits. For structural problems such as back pain, particularly when it is severe or chronic I find helpful to combine modalities such as acupuncture and deep tissue massage therapy. Chronic or severe medical conditions require more frequent treatments in the beginning, and take a longer time to resolve.

Oriental Medicine and acupuncture are powerful healing tools, but they are not panaceas nor the solution to every health care problem. Both Western and Oriental Medicine have their respective strengths and weaknesses, which is why in modern China, the two systems are used together. When appropriately combined, the patient is well served.
Generally speaking, acute, life threatening conditions are best handled by Western medical doctors. Routine health problems and chronic conditions, for which drug therapy and surgery have not been effective, often benefit from Acupuncture / Oriental Medicine.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners in 1996. The FDA requires that sterile, nontoxic needles be used and that they be labeled for single use by qualified practitioners only.
